Designing Cities: Interview with Wang Hui
Submitted by Yuk Hui on Mon, 10/12/2009 - 11:48Conversation with the Chinese thinker Wang Hui on civil society, governance, modernity and cosmopolitanism.
"Now the civil society, when we talked about autonomy of civil society, we have to ask what kind of organization, linked with the old practice. but now people try to use the term civil society which has nothing to do with these practice. (mainly ngo now)
i actually involved some of the moments, a lot of the NGO. these kind of society is kind of global floating, for example, general speaking, the NGO organization can be devided into two groups, international ngo, local NGO. the local NGOs are quite ambiguous, registration itself is very difficult, they have to apply in the business sector. on the other hand, a lot of ngos in china, including local, are from global financial sectors. the programs for these ngos are glocally, they cannot root in the local society. now they mainly focus on the media, local campaign, project, link with the most effective part of that, internationally related. Reconstructing south west china, you need to NGO to mobilize people, also other countries, ngo is a link with foreign powers." Wang Hui
